Looking for a long-term, non-toxic alternative to conventional antifouling bottom paint for yachts, sailboats and commercial vessels? Finsulate® is a long-term alternative to traditional antifouling bottom paint. Unlike conventional copper- and biocide-based coatings, Finsulate uses a dense fiber surface to help prevent marine organisms from establishing on the hull. Eco Safeway provides Finsulate sales and professional installation for yachts, sailboats and commercial vessels in Fort Lauderdale, South Florida and throughout the USA.
Why boat owners are switching

Replace toxic antifouling paint with a patented, eco-friendly hull wrap designed for long-term performance and ocean protection.
Conventional antifouling bottom paint relies on copper and toxic biocides to deter marine growth. Over time, these coatings degrade and create serious environmental and operational issues:
Finsulate® antifouling is a patented, self-adhesive hull wrap made from recyclable marine-grade nylon fibers. Installed on nearly 1,000 vessels worldwide, it prevents biofouling without toxic chemicals.

Invented by Dutch materials scientist Rik Breur, Finsulate has received international recognition including:
Inspired by the natural antifouling properties of sea urchins, Finsulate creates a dense field of microscopic, flexible fibers perpendicular to the hull surface. These fibers move with water flow and prevent algae spores and larvae from attaching.
The fibers are applied using electrostatic flocking, ensuring consistent vertical orientation and secure bonding. The adhesive layer is chemically inert and non-toxic, engineered for long-term seawater resistance without contributing to microplastic pollution.
By preventing hard fouling such as barnacles and mussels, Finsulate helps maintain optimal hydrodynamic performance.

Finsulate eliminates copper leaching, reduces microplastic pollution, and minimizes sandblasting cycles associated with repainting.

Finsulate® requires proper hull preparation and professional application. Eco Safeway provides trained Finsulate installation for yachts, sailboats and commercial vessels. Each project is evaluated based on hull condition, existing coatings, vessel dimensions, operating environment and intended use. Installation includes appropriate surface preparation, material application, attention to hull transitions and underwater appendages, and final inspection.
Finsulate typically provides 10+ years of antifouling performance depending on vessel usage and water conditions.
Yes. It contains no copper, no biocides, and does not release toxins into marine ecosystems.
Yes. Finsulate is specifically designed as a long-term replacement for toxic antifouling coatings.
| Traditional Bottom Paint | Finsulate® | |
|---|---|---|
| Antifouling method | Biocidal coating | Physical fiber surface |
| Copper | Common in many coatings | No |
| Biocides | Common | No |
| Repainting | Recurring | Long-term installation |
| Sanding/prep | Recurring | Primarily installation |
| Warranty | Product dependent | 8 years |
| Expected lifespan | Varies | 10+ years expected |
| Maintenance cycle | Recurring | Reduced |
Comparing Finsulate with antifouling paint based only on material price can be misleading. A conventional bottom-paint cycle can include haul-out, pressure washing, surface preparation, sanding, paint, labor, storage and vessel downtime. These costs can recur throughout the life of the vessel. Finsulate should therefore be evaluated based on total cost of ownership rather than the initial material price alone.
